Dr. Derek V. Godinho is the Founder and Medical Director of the Eyewest Vision Institute. Dr. Godinho graduated with an MD from the University of British Columbia in 1985 the youngest in his class. Following this he completed a rotating internship at Lions Gate Hospital and practiced as a General Practitioner for a year before starting his Residency in Ophthalmology in the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of British Columbia. Following successful completion of this he undertook an intensive two year Fellowship in Diseases and Surgery of the Retina and Vitreous at the prestigious Devers Eye Institute in Portland Oregon. He returned to Canada and has been in practice on the North Shore since 1992. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in Canada and is Board Certified as a Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology in the United States. He maintains licensure in the Province of British Columbia and the State of Oregon.

Dr. Godinho is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the University of British Columbia and former Chair of the joint UBC BCSEPS Continuing Professional Development Committee. He is a former Head of the Division of Ophthalmology at Lions Gate Hospital and also served on the Executive and was President of the BC Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons. He is currently the President of the Association of British Columbia Retina Specialists and Medical Lead of the BC Provincial Retinal Diseases Treatment Program. He is a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, The Canadian Ophthalmology Society, The Canadian Retina Society, The Canadian Medical Association Doctors of BC and is a Life Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Godinho is on staff and has active surgical privileges at Lions Gate Hospital and is a Consultant at the Vancouver General Hospital, and the University Hospital of Northern BC. Dr. Godinho is a very experienced cataract surgeon as well as a retinal specialist. His practice is focused on the treatment and surgery of cataract and refractive problems as well as all retinal diseases including complex cases utilizing the state of the art diagnostic surgical and treatment facilities available on the North Shore at the Eyewest Vision Institute.
