Cataracts

What is Cataracts?

A cataract is a clouding of the crystalline lens of your eye caused by changes in the protein matrix in the lens. This lens is responsible for focusing light to the back of your eye, thus the clouding of the lens can cause blurring or clouding of your vision that will worsen over time. Cataracts generally occur in both eyes and often at the same time. If left untreated the gradually blurring vision can lead to total vision loss. Cataracts generally occur with age but can also be caused at any age by a traumatic eye injury, certain types of medications used to treat eye or systemic diseases or secondary to other eye diseases such as diabetic retinopathy.

The leading cause of blindness in today’s world is cataracts. It’s speculated that 18 million people worldwide suffer blindness as a result affecting both adults and children. Access to cataract surgery and education about cataracts can be limited and difficult in developing countries leaving many to live with avoidable blindness.

SEVA is a non-profit organization that works in developing countries to provide surgery and other vision restoring services to bring back sight to those in need. Starting Nov 1st 2013 until Oct 31st 2014, Dr Godinho will be supporting SEVA Canada by generous donation matching of his surgical patients’ donations. You can click on the link below to go directly to our donation webpage to make your donation or ask your surgical booking coordinator at Eyewest Vision for more information.
