Central Retinal Vein Occlusion (CRVO) and Branch Retinal Vein Occlusion (BRVO)

The central retinal vein is comprised of many small branches of veins and is the main source of blood supply to and from the retina. Occlusion can occur resulting in the restriction of blood supply and cause swelling.

Branch retinal vein occlusion is 3 times more common than CRVO. It is most often found in people over the age of 60 years. It is caused by occlusion of one of the branches of the central retinal vein.

BRVO is usually sudden and causes blurred vision or a central visual field defect.

Treatment for retinal vein occlusions may include the following: laser photocoagulation therapy, steroid injection with Kenalog and anti-VEGF drug injections with Avastin or Lucentis.
