What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that can result in optic nerve damage and can eventually lead to loss of vision. The different types of glaucoma are open angle (which accounts for approximately 90% of the cases diagnosed) angle closure, normal tension and congenital glaucoma. Glaucoma is mainly due to an over production of fluid in the eye or inadequate drainage of fluid from the eye, both causing elevation in eye pressure. If left untreated, elevated eye pressure can cause damage to the optic nerve, the part of your eye that relays what you see to your brain, thus causing vision loss.

In cases of open angle glaucoma or normal tension glaucoma there may be no noticeable symptoms other than very gradual vision loss. It is important to get regular eye exams to measure your eye pressure and check the health of your optic nerves. Monitoring for signs of glaucoma can help prevent optic nerve damage and permanent loss of vision.
